Gia Le was almost right in the middle, between Phu Bai and Hue on Highway 1. If you were traveling from Phu Bai to Hue, you could only turn left from our village, and you would come across an old hospital and a graveyard.
The 82nd Airborne was camped right on the other side of the hospital and graveyard. We had some problems with them. While out on patrol one night we got into a firefight with them. While traveling through our village they caught one sniper round and blew away almost half the village. A jeep caught a sniper round on Highway 1 right outside our village, and the driver and passenger abandoned it with a 50 cal. machine gun mounted on it. We got a call from the 82nd asking us to retrieve the jeep, and, of course, when we went out to get it the 50 cal. was gone.
....I remember an older guy who was all scarred up and missing both legs. He pushed himself along on a little cart and sold Coke and Tiger Piss.
